Lake Michigan Issues. This program will be about issues facing the Lake Michigan Inner League of which we, as members of our local league, are members. The Lake Michigan League of Women Voters is an Inter-League Organization made up of the local Leagues of Women Voters within the Lake Michigan watershed and/or regional planning areas. It is an integral part of and operates under the Natural Resources position of the League of Women Voters of the United States. Henrietta Saunders, President of the LMILG, will be the speaker.

LMLWV works to educate the public on the problems of Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes; encourage public participation in planning for the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes; support scientific research for the Great Lakes; and encourage shoreline management planning and implementation.

LMLWV also just received, with the LWVIL Education Fund, a grant from the state of Illinois to implement a campaign to educate citizens about problems associated with storm water runoff, emphasizing action that individuals, communities and regions may take to prevent and alleviate flooding after rain storms, with an emphasis on green infrastructure, and the speaker will provide an update on that project as well.

Sheri Latash, a member of the LWVUS Agriculture Study Committee, will provide information on current technology issues in agriculture including genetically modified organisms GMOs), herbicides, pesticides, agriculture water pollution, aquifer depletion, antibiotics in livestock, and accurate food labeling; and current agriculture finance issues including consolidation in agriculture industries, crop subsidies and the federal agricultural regulatory process.

Ms. Aargaard will review the various referenda issues that will be on the November 4 election ballot, including proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution, and several advisory referenda. LWVIL Charter School Study presentation. What ARE charter schools? Who establishes them? Why would anyone want them? Who pays for them? Do they have to follow state laws? To whom do they report? Do voters have any say in charter schools? Are charter schools still public schools. If you cannot answer these questions, then you SHOULD attend the October 21st informational meeting, where all will be revealed. Our consensus is Jan. 17th, so it's important that we inform ourselves about basic issues. We have invited Ann Courter, co chair of the State LWV Charter School Study group to speak and present an informational slide show.

Housing Issues in the South Suburbs: Forum on Its Recovery. This meeting will be a panel discussion on topics including current programs available to address the problems of distressed homeowners and the reason for the slow rebound of the local housing market from the national housing recession. The underlying causes of the situation and additional measures needed to stimulate recovery will be explored.

The panel will conclude with an interactive discussion of possible actions and strategies that could accelerate activity in the local housing market and provide further relief to families adversely impacted by the recession

The Cook County Justice System. The speaker, Janice Goldberg, Co-Chair of the Cook County League of Women Voters Criminal Justice Interest Group, will discuss the CCLWV's study of the Cook County Criminal Justice System, a group initiated after a 2014 report focusing on the inequities of the pre-trial system in Cook County.

Ms Goldberg will discuss the group's findings, recommendations for improvements and their commitment for the future.

Earth Day Walk in the Park: Update on PF Parks Projects. Rob Gunther, Director of Recreation & Parks for Park Forest, will share plans for the redevelopment of Murphy Park, Village Green and Somonauk Park. After his presentation, weather permitting, everyone is invited to go on a tour of these three parks with Mr. Gunther.

Following the tour of the parks, those who are interested will go to lunch at the Chicago Dough Company, located at 3767 Sauk Trail in Richton Park.

This is a great opportunity to see what Park Forest offers It also is a follow-up to a study done by LWVPFA many years ago.

The Electoral College and How Elections Work. This program will be an explanation of the Electoral College and other aspects of the election system in the United States. LWVPFA members Barbara Moore and Mary Lubertozzi will present this enlightening program, focusing on the history and operation of the Electoral College as well as the movement to change it. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would ensure that the candidate winning the popular vote becomes President, will be explained.

Immigration and Refugees. The program will be a presentation on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals(DACA)program created by President Obama in 2012 by Executive Order. DACA allows young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children to remain in the country. In September President Trump announced that if Congress does not pass legislation that provides a more permanent solution, the program will end in March, 2018.
